5 Sunnah Acts to Follow Sha’ban

5 Sunnah Acts to Follow in Sha'ban
The month Shaban falls precisely one month before Ramadan’s month and especially holds the Muslims in special attachment because Shaban comes as the foretelling preceding the holy month of Ramzan.

It is also known as the “neglected month” because it lies between two sacred months that are Rajab and Ramadan, whereas Sha’ban is, in fact, a month of blessings, reflection about oneself, spiritual growth, and preparing for the ensuing sacred month.

The acts of worship issued in Sha’ban were emphasized so much by the Prophet Muhammad; to be precise, what he used to do and say proved that this month stands important.

This article outlines 5 Sunnah acts to be done in Sha’ban and offers a set of tips on how Muslims can maximize their benefit from this blessed month.

Insha’Allah, by implementing these, you will draw closer to Allah, lighten your heart, and prepare your soul for that transformational journey called Ramadan.

5 Sunnah Acts to Follow in Sha’ban

Here are 5 Sunnah acts to be followed in the month of Sha’ban:

1. Increase in Voluntary Fasting

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to fast much in Sha’ban. Aisha, RA, narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not fast in any month more than Sha’ban. He used to fast all of Sha’ban except for a little.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 2354)

Now, preparations for the fast of Ramadan along with increasing the rewards should be done.

2. Seek Forgiveness, Purify the Heart

The 15th night of Sha’ban is called Laylat al-Bara’ah, the Night of Forgiveness, when Allah forgives the sins of His servants, except for those having enmity or grudges.

Key Points:

  • Repent from past sins
  • Forgive people and let go of grudges
  • Reunite broken ties

3. Increase Acts of Worship (Ibadah)

Financial investment in more prayer, reciting the Quran, dhikr, remembrance of Allah, and dua; spiritual training for Ramadan.

4. Spend in Charity (Sadaqah)

The Prophet loved charity, and charity spent in Sha’ban especially facilitates Charity during Ramadan Kareem, since even a small, continuous act of charity is most loved by Allah.

5. Send Salawat upon the Prophet

Send more blessings and greetings to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ; a great reward, hence attach thyself with him much more than usual is.

These Sunnah practices give excellence to Sha’ban and get the heart, body, and soul ready to receive the blessed month of Ramadan.

What is Dua of Shaban?

Sha’ban is a blessed month, and no specific dua exclusively comes through any authentic sources for Sha’ban, but one can always make general supplications for forgiveness, mercy, and preparation for Ramadan.

One of the most common duas being read in Sha’ban goes like this:

Allahumma barik lana fi Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan.

“O Allah, bless us in Sha’ban, and let us attain the month of Ramadan.”

By comparison, one considers how spirituality is carried within the eagerness to have and experience more blessings in this season of fasting and further use of prayer in seeking pardon/mercy for your actions.

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbu al-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.

“O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.”

These supplications cleanse the heart and make an individual prepared to welcome the upcoming holy month.

What Did the Prophet Do in Shaban?

The Prophet Muhammad gave much regard and respect to the month of Sha’ban in the light of several authentic narrations. Some of the routine practices of the Prophet in this blessed month are as under:

1. More Voluntary Fasting

The Prophet -ﷺ – used to fast more in Sha’ban than any other month except Ramadhan. As narrated by Aisha RA:

The Messenger of Allah used to fast for such a long time that we thought he would never break his fast, and he did not fast until we thought that he would never fast.

I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’ban.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1969, Sahih Muslim 1156)

This explains why spiritual and physical preparation is called for before the beginning of Ramadan.

2. Ready for Ramadan

The Prophet made Sha’ban a month of preparation wherein he would:

  • Increase worship to strengthen his relationship with Allah.
  • Engage the body in training for long days of fasting in Ramadan.
  • Encourage his companions to increase their good deeds.

3. Focused on Purification of the Heart

The Prophet identified the month of Sha’ban as a month for purification and forgiveness from Allah: “This is a month in which the deeds are presented to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 2357)

That reflects the great value of fasting and keeping on the state of piety.

4. Forgiveness and Reconciling Relationships were Emphasized

It is narrated that on this 15th night of Sha’ban, the mercy of Allah descends and forgiveness is given to many except those who have enmity or cut family ties.

The Prophet urged his followers to reconcile with one another, let go of grudges, and pray to Allah for forgiveness so that one could receive full benefit on this night.

5. Strengthened His Connection with Allah

Sha’ban was the month of excessive prayer, excessive dhikr, and supplication. For this month, the Prophet would renovate his attention to worshipped and set an example for others.

Through such practices listed above, the Prophet showed how to avail spiritual opportunities in Sha’ban while preparing the road for a transformative journey in Ramadhan.

Which Surah to Recite in Shaban?

Indeed, there is no Surah that is especially recommended to be read in Sha’ban through any authentic hadith.

However, this provokes Muslims to increase their recitation of the Quran in general in this blessed month out of preparation for Ramadan. That said, here are some Surahs you can prioritize by the following, for instance:

1. Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)

This Surah was beloved by Allah and equated to a third of the Holy Quran; its recitation should be increased in Sha’ban to derive more blessings so the heart gets ready for Ramadan.

2. Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67)

The Prophet said:

“There is a Surah in the Quran which contains thirty verses that kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is ‘Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion’ (i.e., Surah Al-Mulk).”

(Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2891)

A habitual recitation of this Surah each month during Sha’ban may ease the way to do so in the holy month of Ramadan.

3. Surah Yasin (Chapter 36)

It is recited for spiritual contemplation and gaining Allah’s blessings, although no true Hadith establishes a particular tie of Surah Yasin, especially with Sha’ban.

4. Surah Ad-Dukhan (Chapter 44)

On the 15th night, some traditions highly recommend reading Surah Ad-Dukhan due to abundant showers of blessings and bountiful repentance. Of course, narrations concerning rewards for specific things are sometimes queried as to their authority, so ultimately, the benefit is in the recital of the Quran in general.

5. Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2)

The Prophet said:

“Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking recourse to it is a blessing, and abandoning it is a cause of grief.”

(Sahih Muslim 804)

In Sha’ban, recitation of portions of this Surah builds spiritual strength in preparation for the coming month of Ramadan.

Conclusion:

There is no Surah that talks particularly about Sha’ban, but the focused recitation of the Quran in this month helps an individual build up the habit of Quran recitation and gets him ready for Ramadan.
