What Is Tashahhud In Prayer?

What is tashahhud in prayer?
Learning the Tashahhud full meaning is essential for every Muslim, because we recite it in prayer and can be used to send prayers upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Muslims recite the tashahhud once when offering two Rakat prayer, like Fajr prayer, and twice when offering three or four Rakat, like Maghrib and Duhr prayers.

What do you say during Tashahhud?

In the Four or three Rakat prayers you should recite the first part of Tashahhud as follows:

Attahiyyaatu lillaahi wassalawaatu , wattayyibaatu , assalaamu ‘alayka ‘ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu, assalaamu ‘alaynaa wa ‘alaa ‘ibaadillaahis-saaliheen. ‘Ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wa ‘ash-hadu ‘anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasooluhu.

All greetings of humility are for Allah, and all prayers and goodness. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.

In the fourth Rakah or the third in the case of Maghrib prayer you should recite the tashahhud full sentences as follows:

At-tahiyyatu lillahi wa-s-salawatu wa-t-tayyibāt, as-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuha-n-Nabīyyu wa rahmat Allāhi wa baraktuhu. Peace be upon us and the righteous servants of God. I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. Don’t forget that when reciting tashahhud, you should raise your right index finger. We do this while we say, “Ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh’.

The tashahhud meaning in English is: O Allah! Praise Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as You Praised Ibraaheem, and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. And send blessings on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent blessings on Ibraaheem, and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory.”

Furthermore, the full Tashahhud dua is recited once when offering two Rakat prayers in the second Rakah, and no tashahhud is recited in the first Rakah.

And peace is on us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and the Apostle of Allah.”

Is Tashahhud obligatory in salah?

Yes, reciting Tashahhud full dua is obligatory in prayer, as it was said:

“The sitting for it [the final tashahhud]” is the 11th pillar or essential part of the prayer; i.e., the sitting for the final tashahhud is an essential part of the prayer. So, if we assume that a person stood up following the prostration and recited the tashahhud standing, that is not acceptable, because he has omitted an essential part, which is the sitting. It is essential to sit, and the tashahhud must also be recited whilst sitting, because he said “ the sitting for it”, so the sitting is connected to the tashahhud, and it may be understood from this that the tashahhud must be recited in the same sitting.” [al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 3/309]

If you find it difficult to memorize the Tashahhud full dua, you could write it on paper and try to memorize it. Read from the paper while you pray until you can recite it by heart. With time, you will know it by heart, and you will be proud of yourself.
