Before Islam Bilal ibn Rabah hated idols. When Islam was revealed and the prophet announced his prophethood, Bilal accepted Islam. he was one of the first nine people to convert to Islam.
At the beginning of Islam, anyone who converted to Islam was brutally tortured, and one of the oppressed people who went through brutal torture was Bilal ibn Rabah.
When his master Umayyah ibn Khalaf learned about his conversion to Islam, he started torturing him, thinking that this will make him turn back to worshiping idols.
When Bilal refused to return to worshiping idols, his master tortured him, taking him to the desert in the midday heat. Throwing him on the sand and putting burning hot rocks on his body and chest. They did that every day.
Some of his executioners took pity on him and said that they would free him only if he speaks well of their idols. Even though this one word would save him from the brutal torture he refused to say it. Instead, he said, “Ahad Ahad” (Allah is absolute). They shouted at Bilal ibn Rabah to say ‘Al-Laat’ and ‘Al-Uzzaa’. But he refused and kept saying “Ahad Ahad”. They said repeat after us but he answered “Indeed my tongue is not good at that.”
In the end, they resumed torturing him by throwing him in the melting heat of the sun and the heavy weight of the rocks in the morning. And when the sunsets they tied a rope around his neck and let their boys take him around the mountains and streets of Makkah.
