What is Tajweed of Quran? Tajweed of Quran is a combination of rules that we use to read the holy Quran correctly and to ensure our right pronunciation of the letters. The rules of Tajweed include the sounds of the letters, when to open them, or hide them, in addition to many other rules.

 The prophet Mohammed (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“The one who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite.”

 The Quran Tajweed rules depend on four main issues:

 The articulation points of each letter.

  • The characteristics of each letter.
  • The change of rules is based on the order of the letters.
  • Exercising the tongue and repeating a lot.

 What are all the Tajweed rules?
There are many tajweed rules but the Islamic scholars have divided the rules into the following basic tajweed rules:
 1. Noon and Meem Moshaddadah.
From its name, these rules apply when finding any of the two letter noon (ن) and meem (م) with a shaddah on it to be written as (نً / مً ) while including Ghunnah of 2 beats.
 2.Al Qalqalah
tajweed rules qalqalah refer to making a vibration sound at the end of the pronunciation of the following letters: Qaaf (ق), Ttaa(ت), Baa(ب), Jiim(ج) or Daal(د). And you apply this rule when you find sukoon or shaddah on the letter and the rule include minor, medium, and major.
 3.Noon Sakinah and Tanween
Among the list of tajweed rules is the rule of Noon Sakinah and Tanween. When you find the mark of sukoon on the letter noon (ن) or when you find the tanween then this rule is applied. Notice that tanween refers to pronouncing noon Sakinah at the end of the word without writing it, it is written as (اً). The rule includes Izhaar, Idghaam, Iqlaab, and ikhfa rules tajweed.
 4. Meem Sakinah
When you find the letter meem  (م) with the mark of sukoon on it then one of the following rules is applied, Ikhfaa Shafawy, Idghaam Shafawy, and Izhar Shafawy.
 5.Prolongation
This rule refers to pronouncing the letter by giving it from 2 to 6 beats based on its type.
 6. Heavy and light letters
The pronunciation of the Arabic letter is divided into heavy letters and light letters.
 7.Laam Shamsyiah & Qamaryiah
The tajweed rule of Laam Shamsyiah & Qamaryiah includes two rules and they are Izhar and Idgaam.
 8. Hamzah
There are two types of Hamzah one of them can be found in any place in the word and it’s called Hamza-tul Oata. While the other one is only found at the beginning of the word and is dropped when continuing the reading, its name is Hamzah-tul Wasl.
 How long does it take to learn Tajweed?
The amount of time each person takes to learn to read the holy Quran with Tajweed rules differs based on how much time the person spends every day learning. Some Mushaf uses the color-coded Quran tajweed rules to make it easier for the reader to notice them and it would be a good idea to start learning using them. Here are some tips to help you learn faster:

  •       Divide the time to learn intonation into a specific period
  •       listen to the recitation of a famous reader.
  •       Repeat after the reciter to enhance your pronunciation and to learn the rule correctly.

How do you memorize Tajweed rules?
Learning and memorizing the tajweed rules might seem hard but it’s not, and here are a few tips that will help you memorize each rule in a second.

  •       Enroll yourself in a good online class to learn with a professional tutor, and you can find many Tajweed courses on our website Noor Academy for kids and adults.
  •       Ensure your understanding of each rule, if you still don’t understand it ask your teacher to explain it again and practice using it on your own.
  •       Listen to your favorite reciter and repeat after him, this will help you to memorize and understand the rule faster.
  •       Keep practicing and don’t be afraid of making mistakes, because you will learn from them and no one will judge you.
  •       Don’t lose hope and keep learning, get rid of all the negative thoughts you have, it’s normal to take time at the beginning.
  •       Teach the rules that you learn to a friend or a family member, this will make you memorize the rule fast.
  •       Intentions are really important; every day make your intention to learn the tajweed rules and remind yourself that you’re doing this for Allah.
  •       Ask Allah to help you keep going and never lose hope.

When you follow these few steps, you won’t find any problem memorizing and learning the tajweed rules chart.

 What does small Meem mean in Quran?

Sometimes when you read a surah you find a small Meem written above some words, what does it mean? Well, when you find a small Meem, this means that you should stop for a moment and then continue reading the rest of the verse. Here’s a verse with a small Meem:

 (إِنَّمَا يَسۡتَجِيبُ الَّذِينَ يَسۡمَعُونَۘ وَالۡمَوۡتَىٰ يَبۡعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ إِلَيۡهِ يُرۡجَعُونَ).
Is it compulsory to recite Quran with Tajweed?
No reading with Tajweed is not compulsory, it is a way to rectify your voice while reciting the holy Quran and it helps you to pronounce each word correctly. So, there is no problem if you read the Quran without tajweed. Reciting it with tajweed rules is a Sunnah, and the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Verily the one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

 Imam Al-Dhahabi said: “Tajwid is a waste of time, I do not know about this, by Allah! But if it is true about him, then what he means is that the person does not get busy with it too much and neglects to pay attention to the meanings.”

From the saying of the Imam, we understand that what is more important is to focus on the meaning of the verses not how we read them.  
Is it important to read Quran with Tajweed?
Reciting Quran correctly is important to be able to understand the meaning of the words, so yes it is important to learn the tajweed rules however it is not obligatory.

There are two views regarding this topic and here are what they say:

The first view of scholars says that reciting the holy Quran with tajweed is obligatory for every capable Muslim whether female or male.

Nasr Al-Shirazi’s saying: “Good performance is an obligation in the recitation, and the reader must recite the Qur’an with the right to recite it.” Ibn Al-Jazari said: “There is no doubt that the nation is just as they worship by understanding the meanings of the Qur’an and establishing its limits, so are they worshipers by correcting its words and establishing its letters on the quality received from the imams of reading, and related to the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him.”

 The second view says: that reciting the holy Quran with tajweed is a sunnah and not obligatory for every Muslim.
