What Is the Sunnah Way to Wear Clothes?
Conceivably, the Sunnah recommended wearing clothes, while being educated by the Prophet Muhammad Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him, are:
1. Wear from the right side of the front:
Sunnah puts on the right side first. For instance, when one is putting on a shirt, he inserts his right arm first, and if he is putting on his pants, it is the right leg first.
2. Saying the Dua:
It is recommended to recite the dua when wearing clothes, as mentioned before:
For new clothes:
For regular clothes:
الحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا (الثَّوْبَ) وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
3. Feeling of Gratitude:
Gratitude to Allah Who has bestowed both of them with the clothes must be emphasized. It should be shown both by uttering it verbally and by the remembrance of Allah’s favor in the heart.
4. Simplicity:
It is obligatory to wear simple, clean, and according-to-occasion clothes. The Prophet, peace be upon him, encouraged simplicity and disliked extravagance or showing off.
5. Cleanliness:
That one’s garments should be clean and free of imperfections reflects principles concerning hygiene and self-respect in Islam.
6. Not Imitating the Opposite Gender:
Men and women must dress according to their gender and must not dress and act like the other gender, such as cross-dressing.
7. Not Dragging Garments:
It is regarded as desirable that a man should not drag his garment below the ankles out of humility and modesty.
By following these actions, one can imitate one’s dressing according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
What Is the Dua for Undressing?
The dua for undressing is:
Bismillah (In the Name of Allah)
Arabic:
بِسْمِ اللهِ
Transliteration:
“Bismillah”
Translation:
“In the Name of Allah”
Reciting “Bismillah” before undressing serves as a means of seeking protection from the gaze of jinn and evil spirits, and it aligns with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Can You Pray Salah with Dirty Clothes?
Other considerations are put in place, depending on the type of dirtiness, into the below categories:
1. Impurities (Najasah):
In case the cloth in question bears impurity, such as urine, feces, blood, or any other item considered impure by Islamic Law, then it becomes mandatory to wash the cloth before offering Salah. Praying with that dress on would annul the prayer.
2. Dirt and Stains (not impure)
Though it is commendable to wear clean clothes for Salah out of respect and devotion, even if they are dirty — for instance, due to mud, dust, or food—they are still valid.
The prayer is only valid as long as the clothes do not carry any impurities on them.
3. Modesty and Cleanliness:
Wearing clean and decent clothes during Salah reflects respect for the act of worship and fulfills the principle of taharah (purity). Allah commands in the Quran:
Surah Al-A’raf (7:31):
“O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid.”
This verse is interpreted to encourage cleanliness and proper attire when performing acts of worship.
In summary:
- Remove Impurities: If your clothes have impurities, clean them before praying.
- Keep clean clothes for Salah, even if they are not impure.
- Modesty and Respect: Make sure that the clothes are modest and respectable to worship in them.
Try, as much as you can, to be the best in purity and cleanliness that you can be when it is time to pray.
