How to Make Dua for Your Parents?
Making dua for one’s parents is considered great and noble in Islam. Here are the steps you can follow in making a dua for your parents:
- Intention or Niyyah: Before you make the dua, intend in your heart that you are making this supplication just for the sake of Allah and seeking His blessings for your parents.
- Choose an Appropriate Time: Although a Du’a may be made at any time, selecting the time most suitable to every person, at which one is more focused and less distracted, will help in increasing sincerity and concentration.
- Praise of Allah First: Begin your Du’a by first praising Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, then send Blessing on Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
- Humility and Respect: Start by approaching Allah with utmost humility and respect. Acknowledge your weaknesses and the infinite greatness of the mercy of Allah.
- Dua for Parents: You can then pray for your parents specifically. In this regard, you may ask of them that they remain healthy and rightly guided, their sins be forgiven, and they live in a manner pleasing to Allah. You may use simple and genuinely heartfelt words.
- Sunnah Examples: Use supplications found in the Quran or Sunnah—traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him—which are recommended, especially for parents.
- Persistence: Make a du’a for them regularly. In Islam, it is encouraged that one persists in dua.
- Close with Thanks: Close your dua by thanking Allah for providing you with the opportunity to make a dua and for hearing your supplications.
Remember, when you make a dua’, what counts is your sincerity and intention. Allah values the sincerity of the heart, so bond your heart with your supplication for your parents.
Which Surah Is Dua for Parents?
There is no specific chapter in the Holy Quran that can be exclusively assigned as a dua for parents in Islam.
However, many of the ayahs and surahs of the Holy Quran can be recited or included in duas for parents because their general themes relate to seeking blessings, guidance, and mercy for loved ones.
Here are a few examples:
- Surah Al-Furqan (25:74): This verse includes a beautiful dua where believers ask Allah for mercy and that their spouses and offspring be a source of comfort for them.
- “Our Lord, grant us comfort from among our wives and offspring to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”
- Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:15): In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) makes a supplication for his parents’ forgiveness.
- “My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house is a believer, as well as the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.”
- Surah Al-Isra (17:24): This verse emphasizes kindness and respect towards parents, which indirectly encourages dua for their well-being.
- “And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'”
- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201): While not specifically about parents, this verse includes a general dua for seeking good in this world and the Hereafter.
- “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
These verses may be read while sending dua to the parents or any other supplications from the Quran, which is directly from the heart to Allah, that they are granted health, guidance, forgiveness, and blessings.
The sincerity and intention behind duas is seeking Allah’s Mercy and Blessings upon your family and loved ones.
What Does the Prophet Say About Parents?
Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, spent a great part of his teaching emphasizing parents and their rights.
Some of the key sayings of the Prophet ﷺ about parents are:
- Kindness and Obedience: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of being kind and obedient to parents. He said:
“Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.”
This hadith emphasizes the maximum respect and good treatment accorded to the mother, whose serving is only for Allah, which is the pleasure and the reward that one gets out of it.
- Dua for Parents: The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to enjoin its supplication for one’s parents and beg forgiveness for them. He said:
“When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” (Muslim)
The next hadith highlights that the children of good deeds are perpetual, always praying and making dua for the deceased parents.
- Respect and Honor: The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that respecting and honoring parents is a fundamental duty:
“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor.” (Quran, 17:23)
The verse and the teaching of the Prophet therefore bring out that parents, whatever their station may be, are entitled to respect and consideration.
The overall teachings of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him regarding the status of parents in Islam are that children should treat their parents with love, respect, and kindness throughout their lives.
What Is A Dua for Dead Parents?
One can pray that one’s deceased parents are blessed with mercy and forgiveness from Allah.
There are some specific Duas mentioned below which can be recited for deceased parents.
1. General Dua for Forgiveness:
“رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًا”
“My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.” (Quran, 71:28)
2. Dua for Mercy:
“رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا”
“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” (Quran, 17:24)
3. Comprehensive Dua:
“O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them peace, and pardon them. Receive them with honor and make their grave spacious; wash them with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse them of their sins as a white garment is cleansed of stains. Give them a home better than their home, a family better than their family, and a spouse better than their spouse. Admit them to Paradise and protect them from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.” (Muslim)
4. Dua for the Believing Deceased:
“O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever You give life from among us, give him life in Islam, and whomever You take away from us, take him away in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not lead us astray after him.” (Abu Dawood)
These may be requested anytime, although they are mostly read during prayer and meditation.
Be sincere in your dua to them—your deceased parents—and mean what you say, so pour out your heart in your supplications to Allah to ask Allah to have mercy upon them and forgiveness, and grant them a place in Paradise.
