How Should We Treat the Animals According to Islam?
The treatment of animals in Islam is paramount because it emanates from their deep-rooted values of compassion, respect, and ethical responsibility.

At the very center lies the example conduct of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, whose life serves as a profound model about how humans should relate with all living beings.

The Prophet announced that mercy extended to animals reflects, in fact, faith itself in speech and deed.

This paper discusses different ways in which the Prophet treated animals in an attempt to elaborate on some of the main principles of mercy and attention that Muslims must follow.

By reflecting upon these lessons, one will appreciate the greater Islamic perspective on animal welfare and the importance of building a thoughtful relationship with all of God’s creations.

How Should We Treat Animals in Islam?

The treatment of animals in Islam is based on an ethical foundation involving mercy, respect, and responsibility.

Similarly, the Quran and Hadiths have been prolific in the good treatment of animals in ensuring that their rights are considered and their welfare promoted, including the following:

1. Mercy and kindness

Quranic Teachings: The Quran teaches that animals, too, are living in communities amongst themselves, just like human beings are life forms.

As will be mentioned in the Quran 6:38, they are to be treated with compassion. The Quran urges believers to treat all life – including animals – with mercy.

Prophetic Traditions: The Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him – encouraged being kind to animals in many of his Hadiths. He cursed those who ill-treated them and pointed out the merits of people who render services to animals.

2. Animal Welfare

Animal’s Rights: In Islam, there are specific rights for animals regarding food, water, a place to live, and good treatment. One who fails to do so commits a sin.

Prohibition of Cruelty: Islam has strictly interdicted causing cruelty to animals. It does not permit the inflicting of unnecessary pain or torturing of animals needlessly.

There are numerous Hadiths that record the punishments given to people for treating animals cruelly, which shows the seriousness of their actions.

3. Sustainable and Ethical Treatment

To Utilize for Benefit: Animals could be put to work, used for transportation, or even used for food, provided that it is in the most viable and decent way possible. It does not permit overworking or stressing it out.

Hygienic Practices: Similarly, in cases of slaughter for consumption, Islam teaches humane practices.

The animal has to be treated well before it is slaughtered, and the act of slaughter must be done with the least pain in the quickest way possible by the halal method.

4. Environmental Considerations

Balance in Creation: Islam teaches that humans are the stewards of Earth, Khalifah, and are therefore responsible for taking care of the environment, which also includes the habitats of animals.

Care for the environment involves protecting wildlife and their ecosystems.

Sustainable Practices: Islamic teachings encourage living in harmony with all creatures and their environments by farming and fishing sustainably.

5. Spiritual Connection

Respect to Life: The good treatment of animals acts as a form of faith, and the behavior one conducts toward animals is a reflection of one’s relationship with God since all living things are signs of God’s creation.

Dua and Reflection: Many Muslims make dua for the benefit of the animals and contemplate the blessings that come from them, creating in themselves a spiritual attachment toward all life.

Conclusion

In a word, the Islamic approach to animal treatment is mercy, moral duty, and respect for their right to life in God’s creation.

This attitude, besides serving the animals, is a reflection of the character and morals of a person and society as a whole.

How Did the Prophet Treat Animals?

The Prophet Muhammad is the perfect example to show mercy and compassion to animals. He showed, through his teachings and actions, respect for all living things.

The Prophet taught consideration and dignity in the treatment of animals. Following are some basic features of the attitude that the Prophet manifested towards animals:

1. Compassionate Care

All animals are to be treated with mercy. Indeed, he was merciful with the animals, serving Allah through that.

As narrated in one famous Hadith, he said, “A woman was punished in Hell because of a cat that she had confined until it died.

She did not give it to eat or drink when it was confined, nor did she free it so that it might eat the insects of the earth” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Animal Care: The Prophet had a cat. Her name was Muezza, and he treated her with great affection. He is reported not to have disturbed her while she lay sleeping and in his love for her, he would cut his robe rather than disturb her.

2. Prohibition of Cruelty

Condemning Cruelty: On the other side, the Prophet condemned cruelty to animals in the strongest terms.

It is related that he said, “Whosoever is merciful to the creatures of God, he is merciful to himself” (Sunan Ibn Majah). This justifies the fact that mercy on animals denotes the character and morality of a person.

Stories of Punishment: The Hadith is replete with stories whereby people were punished for mistreating the animals; how seriously this matter is taken in Islam.

3. Human Slaughter Practice

Moral Slaughter: when it came to the slaughtering of animals for food, humane practices. He instructed that the animal should be treated well before slaughter and the process should be quick to minimize suffering.

He said, “Verily Allah has decreed kindness in all matters. So if you kill, kill in a good way, and if you slaughter, slaughter in a good way. Let one of you sharpen his blade and give comfort to his animal” (Sahih Muslim).

Spiritual Dimension: Slaughtering was to be done to fulfill the dietary needs but with much dignity and respect regarding the life of an animal.

4. Dignity of Animal Life

Avoid Overfatigue: The Prophet instructed that the animals should not be overutilised. The Prophet prohibited putting them into back-to-back work without rest or even attending to them properly.

Care for the Environment: The Prophet was equally worried about the interrelationship that exists between all creations. He showed that the concern for animals was part of the upkeep of nature in balance and harmony.

5. Spiritual Relation

Acknowledgment of Animal Rights: The Prophet’s actions proved that animals, too, had rights that were meant to be considered by man. He respected the standing of animals within the natural scheme of things and also to human beings.

Dua on Animal Welfare: The Prophet made supplications for the welfare of animals, depicting the great level of concern he portrayed in regard to their well-being. He taught that one could receive rewards in the hereafter through acts of kindness to animals.

Conclusion

Prophet Muhammad’s treatment of animals serves as an excellent pattern for Muslims and humans alike to follow.

His teachings provide good advocacy for the adoption of compassion, respect, and good ethics in setting a good relationship between humans and animals.

This, in turn, would be considered a following in the way of the Prophet by applying values in a practical, everyday sense while interacting with all living things.
